Evaluating resources
A key part of the process of deciding whether resources are going to be useful for your assignment is to critically evaluate them. Taking a critical approach doesn't necessarily mean being negative. You are looking for strengths and weaknesses, relevance and reliability and in order to do so you will ask a series of questions about the author or source of the information, the evidence being presented and the claims being made. This critical reading checklist should help you to think about some of these features when judging trustworthiness of resources.
When you are evaluating resources, it is important to be selective. You can't include everything that you find, so developing a good critical reading technique is a key skill. However, it means that you will probably question every newspaper article or magazine that you read for enjoyment too!
