You probably already know that you will be writing reports and essays during your studies. The first step towards putting together a good assignment is making sure you read the right things.

As a work-based student, you will be encouraged to write about your professional values and experiences. However, you won't just be writing about what you think and feel, you will be writing about, for example, the impact regulations or procedures have on your day-to-day work or what a piece of new research might mean for your future career development. Though you will undoubtedly know a lot about your area of work, when you write about it at university, it needs to be in the context of documents, reports or books that you have read which are relevant to the essay topic.

Using Wikipedia or other unsubstantiated web sources in academic work is not appropriate.

This unit will look at some of the best ways to go about finding information, critically evaluating their usefulness and making notes that you can use in your assessments.

This unit includes the following subsections (at the top of the page):
  1. What is a resource?
  2. Finding resources
  3. Evaluating resources
  4. Reading and taking notes
